Vehicle Information/Notes
In 1956 I was stationed at RAF Bassingbourn and wanted to buy my first
car. I was told that an Officer had one for sale and after a
knowledgeable friend had checked it I purchased it for £40. It was a
1937 Talbot BA75 Airline Saloon registration BYM178. It had a 6
cylinder engine, fluid flywheel and pre-selector gearbox, and wire
wheels. It was black and polished up very well. It had a dynastart
(dynamo & starter motor) on front of the engine and the electrics were
so much of a problem that my wife named the car “Mephastopalese”
(which although I have not spelt it correctly can be interpreted as
“the devils assistant”). I and others, did a lot of work on the car
and I even passed my driving test with it in Cambridge. I used the car
almost daily and my wife and I did many happy trips in it. Then I was
posted to Singapore and had to sell our beautiful Talbot, taking £35
for it!

I often wonder what happened to BYM178. Perhaps you will be
interested in my story of the car and I will be most grateful if you
have any information about it.

Regards.

Alan Hartfield.
