Vehicle Information/Notes
6 cylinder overhead valve engine, 1665 cc (61mm x 95mm), coil ignition, Zenith carburettor. 4 speed pre-selector gearbox. 9ft 6ins wheelbase, semi-elliptic front and cantilever rear springs. Alpine Tourer coachwork by Vanden Plas.
Model History
Talbot’s AX65 was the development of the innovative 14/45 model and was introduced in October 1932. Designed by George Roesch, these engines were a move away from the vintage recipe of big slow revving engines. The whole emphasis was on a light smooth high revving engine, which enabled it to be much smaller than its performance would suggest, and more refined and simpler in design than its competitors. Up to the minute features included the four speed pre-selector gearbox of special Talbot design based on Wilson principles, and the newly designed thermometer integral with the flying ‘T’ radiator mascot.
AKM 47
This particular car is unique in being the only 65 fitted from new with an Alpine Tourer body by Vanden Plas, one of the foremost coachbuilders of the time. Supplied on 25 May 1933 to Sidney Lawson Allen of Kingwell Hall near Bath. After the war it belonged to various owners in the North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire area, and between 1969 and 1997, it was owned by the Costigan family. It has now been in its present ownership since 2006. Records show the car has been well maintained since the 1960’s, with the work being carried out by many of the Talbot specialists. In its current ownership, it has participated successfully in local car club events and a number of European tours. It is maintained in roadworthy condition and in regular use.
