Vehicle Information/Notes
Six cylinder 1666cc with 45 hp engine – the new 1445 AU. 4 speed manual Talbot . 4 speed manual Talbot ‘silent third’ gearbox without synchromesh. Six-light saloon body by Weymann.
History
The 1445 was launched at the 1926 motor show – engineered by Georges Roesch -and was the saviour of the Talbot marque. All subsequent Talbots were based on this model – including the high performance 90, 105 and 110 models. ‘Gwendoline’ is one of the last 1445 models to be produced by Talbot before production switched to the Talbot 65 (so called because the top speed of this new model was 65 mph)
GY5955 – aka Gwendoline
Gwendoline is a very original car having 54,000 miles on the clock from new – mainly because she was laid up from 1937 until the 1980s having suffered a near fatal re-bore which wasn’t perpendicular. This was rectified by my father (Anthony Rawlings) for her previous owner, At the same time her compression ratios were changed so that she could cope with unleaded fuel. These days the threat comes from high levels of ethanol in fuel instead.
Gwendoline’s front bench seat folds down into a double bed with the rear seat- although this has yet to be tested by Sally (and husband Dave), her current owner since 2008. On average Gwendoline does 4,000 miles/year attending Talbot Owners’ Club and other vintage car events in the UK and abroad as well as touring England and Wales. Gwendoline is a joy to drive – especially on A roads with few pot holes….! SM
